This copycat Starbucks brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso is a quick, easy, and budget-friendly iced coffee that tastes just like the original. Made with simple ingredients and a shaking technique that creates a frothy, velvety texture, it’s the perfect morning ritual.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shots espresso (about 2 ounces) or ½ cup very strong brewed coffee
  • 2 tablespoons packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • ¾ cup unsweetened oat milk (preferably Oatly Barista Edition or Chobani Extra Creamy)
  • Ice cubes (large, solid cubes preferred)
  • Optional: tiny pinch of cinnamon or drop of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Make the Brown Sugar Syrup: In a small bowl or microwave-safe cup, combine 2 tablespoons of packed brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of hot water. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. If needed, microwave for 15 seconds and stir again. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Brew Your Espresso or Coffee: Prepare 2 shots of espresso (about 2 ounces total) or ½ cup of very strong brewed coffee. Let it cool for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Combine in the Jar: Pour the brown sugar syrup into a mason jar or cocktail shaker. Add the hot espresso or coffee. If using cinnamon or vanilla extract, add it now. Stir briefly.
  4. Add Ice and Shake: Fill the jar about halfway with ice cubes. Secure the lid tightly and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until frothy.
  5. Pour Over Fresh Ice: Fill a serving glass with fresh ice cubes. Pour the shaken espresso mixture over the ice.
  6. Add the Oat Milk: Slowly pour ¾ cup of oat milk over the back of a spoon into the glass to create layers. Stir gently if desired.
  7. Serve Immediately: Enjoy right away while the foam is still fluffy and the ice is fresh.

Notes

For best results, use freshly opened oat milk and large ice cubes. Let the coffee cool slightly before shaking to prevent excessive ice melt. Shake vigorously for a full 15-20 seconds to develop foam. The drink is best enjoyed immediately.
