Transform a humble packet of instant noodles into a satisfying meal with a perfectly jammy soft egg, soy sauce, and sesame oil. This quick and easy recipe is perfect for dorm rooms or late-night cravings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package instant ramen noodles (e.g., Shin Ramyun, Maruchan, or Nissin)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Boil the water: Fill an electric kettle with water and bring to a boil. Alternatively, heat 2 cups of water in a microwave-safe bowl for 3-4 minutes until bubbling.
  2. Cook the noodles: Place the ramen noodle block in a bowl. Pour boiling water over the noodles until just covered (about 1½ to 2 cups). Cover the bowl with a small plate or lid and let sit for 3 minutes.
  3. Add the seasoning: Remove the lid and break up the noodles gently. Sprinkle about half of the seasoning packet over the noodles and stir to combine.
  4. Crack the egg: Crack the egg directly into the center of the bowl on top of the noodles. Do not stir.
  5. Steam the egg: Cover the bowl again and let sit for exactly 2 minutes for a jammy yolk. Adjust time for desired doneness.
  6. Add finishing touches: Remove the lid carefully. Drizzle soy sauce and sesame oil over everything. Sprinkle sliced green onions on top. Gently stir to break the egg yolk slightly and mix into the broth.
  7. Let it rest: Allow the ramen to rest for 1 minute before eating to let flavors meld.
  8. Eat immediately: Enjoy while the egg is still runny and noodles are tender.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature egg and set a timer for the egg steaming. Do not stir the egg before it cooks. Use less water than you think you need (about 1½ cups) for a more concentrated broth. Sesame oil is highly recommended for nutty depth. This ramen does not store well; enjoy immediately.
