Festive and chewy cookie bars loaded with red, white, and blue M&Ms, perfect for patriotic holidays and celebrations. Easy to make with pantry staples and loved by kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups (255g) red, white, and blue M&Ms

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with brown sugar and granulated sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed or folding with a spatula until just combined.
  6. Gently fold in 1 ½ cups of M&Ms, reserving a handful to sprinkle on top.
  7. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan and sprinkle the reserved M&Ms on top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until edges are golden brown and the center is set but still soft.
  9. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
  10. Use the parchment overhang to lift the bars out and cut into 12-16 squares. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Do not overmix once flour is added to keep bars tender. Fold M&Ms gently to prevent color bleeding. Let bars cool completely before slicing to avoid crumbling. For firmer bars, refrigerate for 15 minutes before cutting. Rotate pan halfway through baking for even browning.
