A quick and easy patriotic dessert featuring layered red, white, and blue jello topped with star-shaped marshmallows, perfect for summer parties and celebrations.

  • 3 oz (85g) red jello mix (strawberry or cherry flavor)
  • 3 oz (85g) blue jello mix (blue raspberry recommended)
  • 1 tsp unflavored gelatin powder
  • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water for each jello mix
  • 1 cup (240ml) cold water for each jello mix
  • 1 cup (240ml) whipped topping (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup (150g) star-shaped mini marshmallows (or regular mini marshmallows cut into stars)
  • Optional: fresh berries like blueberries or strawberries for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Red Jello Layer: In a medium bowl, dissolve the 3 oz red jello mix and 1 tsp unflavored gelatin powder in 1 cup boiling water. Whisk until completely dissolved. Add 1 cup cold water and stir gently. Pour about 1/4 cup (2 fl oz) of this mixture into each cup. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until the layer is firm but not fully set.
  2. Prepare the Whipped Layer: Gently fold the whipped topping to loosen it. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of whipped topping on top of each red layer. Return to the fridge for 15 minutes to chill.
  3. Prepare the Blue Jello Layer: Dissolve 3 oz blue jello mix and 1 tsp unflavored gelatin in 1 cup boiling water. Add 1 cup cold water. Let cool slightly (about 5 minutes). Carefully pour over the white layer using the back of a spoon to prevent mixing.
  4. Chill and Set: Refrigerate the cups for at least 2 hours or until the blue layer is fully set.
  5. Add the Star Topping: Before serving, decorate each cup with star-shaped marshmallows and optionally fresh berries.
  6. Serve chilled.

Notes

Do not rush chilling between layers to ensure crisp, clean lines. Use unflavored gelatin to help layers set firmly. Cool jello slightly before layering to avoid melting previous layers. Add marshmallow stars just before serving to prevent stickiness. For vegetarian/vegan option, substitute gelatin with agar-agar and whipped topping with coconut whipped cream.
